River Quest is pleased to offer a limited number of Atlantic salmon fly fishing trips each year. Lead guide and River Quest Charters owner, Steve Kuieck, trailers his jet boat to Sault St. Marie from where he guides clients seeking Atlantic salmon, widely recognized as the so-called "king of fresh water sport fishes." The St. Mary's River is one of the few rivers in the United States where one may fly fish for these magnificent fish.
Stocked in the St. Mary's by Lake Superior State University fisheries biologists, working in collaboration with natural resources departments from Michigan and Ontario, Canada, the Atlantic Salmon actively feed on insects, smelt, and herring all summer long. When we tell clients that double digit hookups are possible for two fly fishermen, they look at us in disbelief, but so it is. Fished with lighter rods and nymph and streamer patterns, the Atlantics average seven pounds with fish over 15 pounds brought to hand each summer. Chrome, fast, and acrobatic, the Atlantics are truly special. Taking one places one in a small group of successful Atlantic fly fishermen and provide a unique fly fishing experience to share with one's fly fishing friends.
An added bonus is the fact that our clients incidentally catch whitefish that can run to seven pounds, as well as post spawning steelhead and early run Chinook salmon. All enrich a great day on the water fly fishing for Atlantics.
